The Walk’ presents ‘Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon 2017’ gets citizens to put on their running shoes

‘Running is expression of forbearance and a reflection of conquering spirit’: Dr Niranjan Hiranandani

THANE/ MUMBAI, 12 FEBRUARY 2017: The fifth edition of the Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon (HTHM) was flagged off early on February 12, 2017 from Hiranandani Estate, Thane. Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, CMD, Hiranandani Communities, along with the reigning Femina Miss India Winner Ms Priyadarshini Chatterjee flagged off the event. The theme this year for ‘The Walk’ presents ‘Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon 2017’ was ‘Running for Expression’.

Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon 2017 was conceived to be an initiative to awaken residents of Thane and Mumbai to the importance of maintaining their health and lifestyle. “With busy schedules, work pressure and hectic lifestyles, we see that citizens tend to neglect their health. ‘The Walk’ presents ‘Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon 2017’, was planned to be a health wake-up call for residents, we got 12,000-plus citizens to put on their running shoes,” said Dr Niranjan Hiranandani.

Espousing the concept of ‘Running for a Cause’, the fifth edition of the Hiranandani Thane Half Marathon, which had been recognized by the Athletics Federation of India, had four categories. First, the Half Marathon, which had runners going for 21.097km. The second was the ‘Green Run’, which was 10 kms. Then, the ‘Fun Run’, which was 4 kms. The fourth category was the Half Marathon Pacers.

The highlight of this year’s HTHM was participation by a record holder in reverse or retro running, Deepuk Gopal Kanal, who holds the record for reverse retro running over 10 kms, with the Indian flag, the previous record set by him being at Adidas Uprising in 2016. He also holds the record for sideways running with Indian flag in 21 kms. By participating in this run, he expressed support for the ‘Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan’, as also support for pet animals.

Registration fee collected from participants is donated to a charitable institution doing social work. The amount collected through registrations during the last four marathons has been donated to charitable institutions like Ruhi (associated with Tata Memorial Hospital), Jaipur Foot, Mumbai Mobile Creches, Concern India, Oxfam, Buniyaad and Agasthi Foundation. This year the Charity partners were Akshay Patra and Rotary Club of Thane North End.

“No longer is the individual uni-dimensional. Running is the expression of forbearance and a reflection of one’s conquering spirit,” said Dr Niranjan Hiranandani. “The HTHM, an annual event, allows participants to explore their multi-dimensional personalities, helping create better individuals that in turn create better communities,” concluded Dr Niranjan Hiranandani.
