MUMBAI, 20H SEPTEMBER 2016: The list of Smart Cities has gone up, with the Central government’s announcement of 27 additional cities in the list. The inclusion of Thane, arguably the fastest growing city in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in this list was welcomed by Niranjan Hiranandani, CMD, Hiranandani Communities. “It is in keeping with the positives of the city,” he said. “Thane has been growing and is well on way to becoming a global city,” said Niranjan Hiranandani.

The city of Kalyan-Dombivli, which borders Thane, has also made the cut, this will definitely have positive overtones for the enhanced development of both as Smart Cities, going into the future, said Niranjan Hiranandani, who is also the Founder and First President (Maharashtra), National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), which works under the aegis of Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Government of India.

From Maharashtra, three more cities – Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur have made it to the third list, and have been included in the list of Smart Cities. “It is positive for the state of Maharashtra that the main cities in Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of the state, Aurangabad and Nagpur, have been included in the list, and will be developed as smart cities,” he added.

The Smart Cities Mission is a bold new initiative by the Government of India to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens. The concept of Smart Cities has the potential to create well planned urban conglomerations which will incorporate ‘smart connectivity’ through mobile and intyernet services, along with aesthetic beauty and clean, safe cities – which will be comparable to international standards, added Niranjan Hiranandani.

“From the perspective of NAREDCO, the apex body of builders and developers, we see immense opportunities for the real estate industry in transforming cities likes Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nagpur, Nashik and Thane as Smart Cities,” he concluded.
